A story you won’t forget.

Set between 1969 and 1972, Mama Was A Hippie is a raw, heartfelt, often humorous memoir of hitchhiking, soul-searching, and spiritual discovery. What was it like to be a hippie?

Why I Wrote This Book

“What was it like to be a hippie?” That’s what my son asked me. I didn’t have a short answer—so I wrote a book.

This story is for him. For the seekers, the curious, the wanderers, and anyone who’s ever tried to make sense of their past. I didn’t know I was looking for God. But He knew where to find me.

“I was chasing stars, tarot cards, and cosmic signs—never realizing the Shepherd had been chasing me all along.”

This Book Is For You If...

  • You’ve ever searched for meaning in unexpected places.
  • You’re curious what it was really like in the hippie era.
  • You love honest stories about healing, hope, and faith.
  • You’ve got a soft spot for memoirs, music, or miracles.
About the Author

Julie Cunningham

Julie Reeve Cunningham might look like she’s in her 50s, but she’s a flute-playing, rock-collecting 75-year-old with a story to tell. She once hitchhiked across the U.S. with a flute and a dream, and even went back to college at 60 to study geology—rocks are still her favorite souvenirs.

When she’s not writing or playing the lever harp, Julie reflects on the quiet beauty of a life she never expected, and the faith that carried her through.

“God’s Sheepdog kept me safe—whether I knew it or not.”

What People Are Saying

Julie’s book was a pleasure and delight to read. She shared much of herself, her struggles, challenges, fears, heartbreaks along her path, but she also found her Savior Jesus. His hand had been upon her all along and turned her life around for the good.
